What actually happened to Skype<\/span><\/h2>\n

Microsoft announced on February 28, 2025 that it would retire consumer Skype, and it followed through on May 5, 2025. The apps and the Skype.com sign-in now redirect to Microsoft Teams (Free). According to Microsoft’s own support page, your old chats and contacts carry over to Teams if you log in with your Skype credentials.<\/span><\/p>\n

The calling side is where it gets messy. Microsoft stopped selling Skype Credit and calling subscriptions to new customers, and existing calling and Skype Number subscriptions auto-renewed only until April 3, 2025. Skype Number holders had to port their number to another provider before then or lose it. Any leftover Skype Credit still works through the dial pad for now, but you can’t top it up, and the 60-minute Skype calling perk attached to Microsoft 365 plans is being removed starting March 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

The plain translation: the chat and video moved to Teams. The paid international calling that Skype was actually known for did not really come along.<\/span><\/p>\n
