You call the number back and it rings a confused stranger, or nothing at all. Or worse, someone calls <\/span>you<\/span><\/i> angry, saying your number just rang them, except you never dialed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to caller ID spoofing. It is everywhere now, and understanding how it works is the first step to not getting caught by it. Here is the plain version, plus how to keep your own number out of the mess.<\/span><\/p>\n

How a spoofed call works (the short version)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Caller ID was built in a more trusting era. The number that shows on your screen is simply a label the caller’s system attaches to the call. It was never designed to be proof of anything. Scammers exploit that gap with software that stamps any number they like onto the calls they place, so your screen shows something familiar instead of the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two patterns are worth knowing:<\/span><\/p>\n

Neighbor spoofing.<\/b> The call shows a number with your own area code and prefix, because you are more likely to answer something that looks local. The number is borrowed, not genuine.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Number theft.<\/b> Sometimes the number on display is a real one belonging to an innocent person, picked at random. That is why you might get blamed for a call you never made. Your number was used as a disguise, without your knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n
